Marc Appleman Ann-Marie Anderson

Marc Appleman is a proven and innovative sports and entertainment executive who has worked across multiple digital and traditional platforms on both the business and programming sides. A visionary with extensive experience in launching new companies, directing established entities, business development, content creation, strategic implementation and management at leading corporations, start-ups and non-profit organizations.

Marc served for many years as CEO of SABR (Society for American Baseball Research), where he implemented a new strategic vision and leadership for an organization of 6500 members that features 76 worldwide chapters and 31 committees. Under his watch, SABR averaged double-digit annual revenue growth and established important strategic relationships throughout the baseball world (MLB, MLB Network, MLBAM, ESPN, SiriusXM, Rawlings). Marc launched a successful digital business, social media program, e-publishing business and a weekly SABR Analytics show on SiriusXM. He also turned a vision into a reality as the architect of the SABR Analytics Conference, which is held during Spring Training in Phoenix. This conference became the leading baseball analytics conference.

He left SABR to launch a new Arizona headquartered baseball attraction. As the founder and CEO of HOME: The Baseball Experience, Marc's vision is to build an immersive experience that features technology, analytics and a major STEAM component. Through the use of virtual reality, holograms and other cutting-edge technologies, this attraction will be geared to reach the next generation of baseball fans. This 21st century multi- lingual attraction will celebrate the past, present and primarily the future of the game.

Marc also served as Director of Programming of the AOL Sports Channel, which he turned into the #1 interactive sports destination in usage and revenue. In this role, he developed and implemented the vision and strategy for the channel, managed the AOL Sports team and relationships with leading networks, leagues and sports brands (ABC Sports, CBS SportsLine, NFL, NHL, The Sporting News, Athlete Direct). He launched AOL branded play-by-play scoreboards, “Fan Centrals” for more than 20 annual sporting events, and the top sports community in Grandstand. At AOL, he served as Executive Director of the highly successful AOL Network coverage of the 1998 Winter Olympics.

Marc’s prior roles include: Senior Coordinating Editor at ESPN New Media, where he launched “The Meeting Place for America’s Sports Fans” in a major initiative across multiple platforms at ESPN. He also created SportsNation, which became a successful part of ESPN.com, was regularly featured on SportsCenter and it became a popular television show. He also served as Managing Sports Editor at the startup Fox Sports website, where he directed a collaborative effort between the iGuide team in NYC, Fox Sports television in LA, and outside partners and contributors. He held the position of Vice-President & Editor-in-Chief of Digital Media at WWE.

Previously, Marc served as Associate Editor/Director of TV & Radio at Sports Illustrated for Kids, where he wrote numerous cover stories, including Ed Press award-winning stories, “A Bat is Born” and “The Hit Man,” and produced television specials that were nominated for a Sports Emmy (produced with NBC and NBA Entertainment) and a Cable ACE award (produced with HBO Sports). Marc produced a weekly radio show and was instrumental in the launch of the first Sports Illustrated for Kids website. He also held the position of COO for the startup Active Network and served as President of Content and Programming at the startup Nobok Sports where he developed the digital, TV and mobile programming vision and strategy for a sports and entertainment company based in London, England.

Marc’s writing talents were showcased as a sportswriter for the Los Angeles Times and as a published author ("Dad, Are You Pumped? A Father-Son Baseball Odyssey”). He also co-produced and invested in the London based play "A Perfect Gentleman.”

Marc graduated from the Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills and the University of Michigan. He subsequently attended the Harvard Business School Executive Education program, focusing on "The Business of Entertainment, Media and Sports." Marc also attended Oxford University, where he studied British History and Art.

He has regional, national and international speaking and leadership experience, serving for a decade on the award-winning Board of Directors of the University of Michigan Alumni Club of Greater Phoenix, and speaking to sports, corporate, university and alumni groups around the world.

Appleman is an Adjunct Professor at the George Polk School of Communications at Long Island University. 

 

Ann-Marie Anderson, Esq. (a second generation alumni of University of Michigan Law School and third generation Wolverine) is a proven and award-winning international executive, lawyer, advisor and leader in the areas of corporations, sports, government, insurance, venture capital (including, raising venture capital on Sand Hill Road, Silicon Valley), education, litigation, securities, mergers & acquisitions, alumni relations and others.

She has a unique mastery of the business, legal and marketing priorities of publicly traded corporations and other entities developed over more than 25 years as an executive and lawyer, including practicing with some of the world’s largest international and regional law firms (Squire Patton Boggs, LLP and Gallagher & Kennedy, P.A.), as Vice-President and General Counsel of publicly traded technology corporations and privately held companies (Silicon Valley and Scottsdale) and as an Assistant Attorney General. Her deep connection, to and understanding of, federal, state and local governments and public institutions was developed in this latter role and from representing government institutions and agencies, as well as from her father's 30 years leading the Michigan Attorney General's litigation division.

Her broad experience as a lawyer and advisor includes representing sports organizations such as the Arizona Diamondbacks Major League Baseball team and related Bank One Ball Park development, securities compliance and litigation, government/regulatory matters (including, Title VII & IX, OSHA, SEC, FAA, etc.), commercial real estate, aviation/airport representation, venture capital finance, international corporate, m & a, administrative and education law.

She has represented and provided leadership to publicly traded and private corporations and government entities in the U.S., Europe, Asia (including SEC compliance representation of Chinese and other corporations), Canada and Mexico, including, Motorola, Mesa Air, Kmart, Chrysler Financial Corporation/Chrysler Automotive, the Diamondbacks Major League Baseball Team, Phelps Dodge Mining (now Freeport McMoran), ADM International (Dutch semiconductor), SOLON SE (German solar), Nationwide Mutual Insurance Corporation, Biltmore Condominiums, the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), publicly traded airlines, airports, Residential Utility Consumers Office (RUCO), physicians, educational institutions and entities in the following industries: Technology, securities/investments, sports, education, construction, aviation, utilities, insurance, renewable energy, automotive, international, finance, commercial real estate, healthcare. Ann-Marie has also provided strategic and legal advice to a host of international human rights organizations. Her lawyer peers have honored her with honorariums and distinctions (below).

Ann-Marie is a proven and well-connected national leader, alumni and speaker. Her experience includes lecturing at the Arizona State University Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, the University of Michigan Law School, Arizona Technology Council, Phi Beta Kappa Academic Society, alumni groups, State Bar of Arizona Annual Conventions and other legal conventions and programs and various Certified Public Accounting Societies. She has appeared in national business and legal publications, including the Wall Street Journal, the Detroit News, Yahoo! Finance, Businessweek, Crain’s and others. The State Bar of Arizona has twice awarded her its "Outstanding Leadership" Award (2013 and 2017).

She is also an accomplished athlete, playing 4 years of varsity NCAA collegiate tennis, playing #1 singles, #1 doubles, serving as captain and earning All-Time All-Conference honors, while winning multiple state singles championships and qualifying for various United States Tennis Association (USTA) regional and national championships (5.0) while previously serving as head tennis professional at private clubs. She still plays competitively.

Ann-Marie graduated Magna Cum Laude from Albion College in Michigan where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, played 4-years of NCAA tennis, served as Vice-President of Delta Gamma Sorority and won numerous merit and faculty selected scholarships and awards. She earned her law degree from the University of Michigan Law School, where she served as co-founder of one of the country’s first legal journals of its kind, The Journal of Gender and Law.
